The PC version would be absolutely dead if it wasn't for the people that worked hard on fixing the bugs and sharing it with other people, free of charge, out of love for the game. Even then, it's been reported to have several issues and bugs, specially in multiplayer. It's almost impossible to find a working GFWL installer. It's not hard to see that this game has basically been abandoned by both microsoft and steam. There's plenty of harmless and actually very helpful unofficial patches out there. I actually develop for a living for a multi million dollar company. How is it bad advice to tell you don't use an unofficial patch unless you can verify it from the source code provided somewhere? I must say you probably are not that great of a "Windows dev" if you think that advice is some of the worst you've read. If anything, an installer warrants more caution. Just because something has an installer doesn't mean it's legit. are going to do more for your security than anything else. You should be weary of anything you download but common sense and paying attention to what you're downloading, where it's from, who made it, what it actually is saying/doing, etc. As a Windows dev, I can't imagine how some managed or unmanaged code could directly cause permanent damage to hardware (not even factoring in Windows Defender's real-time protection that can't be permanently disabled anymore). Would also love to see examples of breaking hardware from "using unofficial patches" and meet the "child hackers" responsible for them.

You can also verify publisher certificates (if available). Just because there's source code available doesn't mean what you're running is compiled from that repo so if you're actually worried about that kind of stuff then you should do some actual verification and check the official installer's hash with what you have downloaded (if available). Personally, I hate UAC it's the first thing I disable in Windows but for the majority of people it's there to prevent unauthorized changes. Something with an installer is going to have more opportunities to do whatever they want since by default UAC is enabled in Windows and you're granting the Windows Installer elevated (Administrator) permissions. This is super old but I just wanted to say that is some of the worst advice I've read in awhile and respond in case anyone else stumbles upon this. You can break your hardware using unofficial patches. No thanks, unless the source code is on a repo somewhere. I myself have used unofficial patches sometimes you have to but for games that have a valid installer that works why in gods name would you want to use some child hackers unofficial patch.
